Snow day

Due to the snowstorm, today's figure drawing session was cancelled. So have a goofy cartoon instead :)

Warm colored painterly sketches

One on the iPad and one with acrylics, in warm tones for the cold cold winter weekend :)

Posemaniacs random poses

Sometimes when I need to loosen up, I like to play with the Random Pose viewer in Posemaniacs :)

Three different sketches

This first one was based on a cool coat I saw at at store called AKRIS, near my office in Newbury Street.

The second one I did in the Figure drawing session of tonight. I am trying to learn how to compose better, based on value patterns.

This last one is me attempting the same while goofing around with character design, right after watching Gravity :P

Pencil Sketches

I started playing Alice: The Madness Returns. The gameplay is so so, but the art direction is great! It is refreshing to play a game that's not about the "real" world, but about a dream (nightmare!) world :)

New toys

I really like the brush pen! It has been a long time since I've used it. It is helping me with contrast quite a bit. Another new toy I'm trying is an app called Character Design Shuffle, which is basically what the name suggests: It picks a number of attributes at random for you to sketch them in a character. Here are some sketches for a falcon and a princess character it suggested. The fox guy I drew because I was thinking of Pop n' Music (it is a character that shows in the game), and the last last was just a doodle in the train back home. Fun times :)

Brush pen sketch

I had forgotten how much fun it is to use the Brush pen for sketching! Great for when I actually get to sit down in the train. Also, is the return of big hair a thing?

iPad Tuesdays

I make it so late from work that I only have time to grab the iPad before flying to my figure drawing sessions of Tuesday. Still fun :)

Doodling Distortions

My face is getting wrinkled and my hairline is starting to look funky, which is good because it makes it easier to caricature. I doodled this in Photoshop while the kitchen floor was drying after moping it :)

Fashion design is Character Design

I'm lucky to work in Newbury Street in Boston, because I get to see cool outfits in the fancy boutiques and some are very inspiring :)

50 iPhone mini-sketches

I love drawing people in the train, but unfortunately, my schedule and location make it so I never get a seat! Drawing careful sketches on my notebook while standing is out of the question, so I've been using a simple painting application on my phone instead. This is good in a way, because it is forcing me to be very straightforward. The constant shuffling of my fellow passengers getting in and out prevents me from looking at anyone for too long. I have just a  few seconds to capture an impression and move on, sometimes not getting anything more than a silhouette.

Here we have 50 quick drawings of the beautiful people of Boston. More to come :)

Tuesdays, now with iPad

Today I tried the iPad for the figure session. I am also reading Andrew Loomis' The Eye of the Painter and while I wasn't necessarily thinking of any specific approach, It definitely seemed interesting to mix the color fields idea with a cartoony take for the subject. Fun times :)
