Distortions

IN tonight's sessions I decided to try some of the techniques described by Michael D. Mattesi in his book Character Design from Life Drawing.  It's an amazing book, with exercises that prove challenging but very stimulating.

In this particular instance, I used his technique of finding elements of the body that will have a conversation (like her butt, feet, hand and face), frame them in different size rectangles based on proximity and hierarchy, and build the body shape with forceful shapes.

The result is this creature lady in gouache. Fun times!

Sprawl

Tonight's model looked like a a big cat resting, so that's what I did. Gouache for this sessions is a lot more fun than watercolor.

All blue

Tonight's figure session ended up a bit more hapzard than usual, specially because by the time we settle with a pose, I couldn't make up my mind about doing either a cartoon or a straight up drawing. The result was that I didn't measure much for accuracy nor took big risks with the  shapes, and so I ended up with some odd proportions (that hand!) Still, it was tons of fun and I was reminded of a valuable lesson: it never hurts to measure :)

The Fall is coming

A digital sketch I did on lunch breaks at work, inspired by another of those beautiful dresses at the MFA hippie fashion show :D

Another figure painting session for this summer. I need to find a better way to photograph these, I suppose :)

Orange

Today's model was a young dancer. This sketch was made with gouache, which makes everything look classy :)

Pink Hat

One of my figure drawing sessions result. I'm trying to paint more chunky, showing the brushstroke more. Fun!
